Disease-Free Potting Mix
Many people choose to use an organic medium, such as a compost mix when creating a homemade potting mix. Packed with nutrients and environmentally friendly, using compost in your potting mix is a great option. This medium, however, comes with the potential drawback of introducing bacteria and fungus into your plants.
Simply follow these steps:
- 1
Add 125 – 250 ml of Hydrogen Peroxide 3% – Oxygen PlusTM into your organic potting mix and stir it so it is dispersed throughout.
- 2
Plant your plants as usual.
Sterilizing potting soil is very important when sowing seeds, seedlings, and cuttings. It’s also a good idea to treat the potting mix that you re-use. Soil naturally contains pathogens, harmful bacteria, and fungi that can harm or kill susceptible plants. It’s even a good idea to treat store-bought soil, as it may have become contaminated via bag punctures, old shelf life, mishandling, or a slew of other reasons. So, how do you go about sterilizing your potting mix?
Thankfully, it’s very simple using [hp].
Hydrogen peroxide is a colourless liquid that is an ideal solution for ridding your potting soil of harmful microorganisms. Its composition is actually water (H2O)—the only difference is that hydrogen peroxide (H202) has an extra atom of oxygen. It’s completely non-toxic and biodegrades into just water and oxygen. Although hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound, it is naturally-occurring in raindrops. This gentle, yet powerful solution kills bacteria, viruses, mould spores, yeast, and fungi to prevent the transmission of disease in your plants.
[hp] is a wonderful non-toxic alternative to chemical pest control. It can be used to control fungal diseases like powdery mildew or to control microbial pests or small insects like spider mites and fungal gnats.
In addition to killing off harmful microorganisms, hydrogen peroxide comes with some incredible extra benefits. It’s been shown to boost plant growth, treat root rot, and speed up seed germination time. Not to mention, it’s inexpensive and the application doesn’t require a lot of manual labour. Disinfecting your growing medium with the use of [hp] will ensure your garden is free from bacteria and diseases.
